Basecoats for Faux Painting

The basecoat is an integral first step in any painting project, because it provides a blank canvas on which to create your masterpiece. Not only does the basecoat ensure the original surface is clean and ready to accept paint, but it also guarantees the best results in terms of color, vibrancy, texture, adhesion, and durability. There are many different types of basecoat products you can use depending on the project, surface, and materials you’re using, and Faux Masters Studio has them all.

Basecoats and Other Products to Give Projects the Right Start

Primers and sealers are a great place to start when you need a basecoat to produce a clean and even surface for painting. For wood and other porous surfaces, Primer Surfacer and DuraSeal Sanding Sealer both spray on easily and produce a white or clear and full-bodied finish, leaving you with a pristine and ready-to-paint surface.

The Master Finishing Medium is another option for raw wood because it has powerful filling and sealing capabilities, making it an ideal basecoat when you want to create a toned, watermarked, or stained finish for furniture and other painting projects.

SetCoat Products for Any Project

SetCoat is the most ideal basecoat for a variety of faux painting techniques. This product is great for a number of different surfaces, including walls, decorative projects, raw wood, metals, trim, cabinets, and more. The full line of SetCoat products include:

  • SetCoat, which is a finish that can also be used as a basecoat, and that’s available in a full range of colors, and is ideal for creating any decorative finish
  • Blocking Primer, which is a mold- and mildew-resistant primer and stain blocker that can be applied directly to painted surfaces, raw wood, and even metal
  • SetCoat Clear, which is formulated to provide a clear seal, especially over porous latex paint
  • The metallic SetCoat line, which is specially designed for use with metallic paints

Faux Texture Basecoats – Scratch Coats

Texture is crucial in the creation of many faux painting effects, and sometimes choosing the right basecoat can make or break the final result. For instance, if you want to create a layered plaster finish, then Texture Coat is the best solution for a basecoat because of its light texture, great bonding, and superior sealing abilities.

On the other hand, if you’re working with a pre-textured surface and need to start with a smooth one, then TextureFil is the ideal filling basecoat for resurfacing textured areas.

Faux Painting Basecoats that Also Work as Finishes

One of the great things about basecoat products from Faux Masters Studio is that many of them can be used as both basecoats and finishes. Old World Finishing Paint, for example, serves as a great basecoat for furniture, cabinets, and other projects that you want to stain or paint, but it can also be used as a finishing product. Similarly, two coats of MetalGlow Metallic Paint will create a radiant and luminous metallic finish that makes any project look stunning and completely unique.

Basecoats are important to all painting projects because they give you a clean slate to work with, but they’re especially important when working with faux finishes. Faux Masters Studio basecoats will provide you with the clean and primed surface you need to achieve the vibrancy and finish you’re looking for, regardless of the colors you’re working with or the effects you’re trying to achieve.
