• If a super smooth finish is desired, all surfaces from the substrate through to the final layer must be smooth.
• Two colors of Venetian Gem® or more may be applied at one time. Be careful not to over blend.
• Venetian Gem® contains large amounts of natural ground pigments. The color may be altered slightly using FauxCreme Color™. Do not add more than 12 oz. of colorant per gallon.
• For drastic color adjustments it is best to inter-mix the pre-existing Venetian Gem® colors and then modify slightly using the colorants.
• Venetian Gem® is excellent over textured surfaces such as Sandstone™, PlasterTex®, True Tint Stone™ as well as many other Faux Effects® products.
• Thin Venetian Gem® with water and trowel through a StencilFX stencil to create a plaster architectural/dimensional relief.
• Burnishing Venetian Gem® before applying Venetian Gem® Clear Gloss Coat or Venetian Gem® Finish Coat will create more depth in the finish.
• Venetian Gem® may be embellished with several other products in the Venetian Gem® series. Other products in the series are: Venetian Gem® Gloss Coat, Venetian Gem® Finish Coat, Venetian Gem Bellissimo® and Venetian Gem® Hi-Lite. For application instructions regarding other products in the Venetian Gem® series, please refer to the individual product application sheets.
• The following materials may be added to Venetian Gem® to create different looks: Water (for thinning); CrackleMate®/CrackleAdd™ for crackling Venetian Gem®; Olde World Lime Paint & Wash™ to create a harder finish with more shine (do not use FauxColor™ in this application); Olde World Fresco™–add 10–30% for easier workability and a fast soft shine (good for large areas especially when applied over PlasterTex®).

• Ensure that the surface is clean and free of dust, grease, etc. Apply at least one coat of Setcoat® allowing 2-4 hours to dry between coats. For best results allow to dry overnight before applying Venetian Gem®. Choose a base color that is similar to the selected Venetian Gem® hue for easy and less need product coverage.
• Using a thin flexible application trowel (stainless steel or plastic) apply Venetian Gem® over the entire surface. This first coat should be applied as smoothly as possible; however, air pitting and graceful trowel lines or skip toweling are permitted in this first base layer.
• Natural imperfections will enhance the color patterns when the Venetian Gem® material is burnished during the final stages. Each light coat of Venetian Gem® will dry in approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
• Apply additional thin coats of Venetian Gem® (in the same hue or a complimentary color/tone). Working in small sections at a time, randomly skip trowel the material over the finish. When this layer has dried, this process may be repeated until the desired look is achieved. Try to avoid creating obvious patches, but rather interlace the colors as you go.
• Once all the layers are completely dry, the material is ready to be polished. The final burnish is achieved by laying the trowel at a 45º angle and applying pressure as the trowel is moved across the surface. Repeat this procedure until the desired shine is achieved. A stainless steel/wooden or plastic trowel will work best for this procedure. Wet/dry fine sanding with 1000-1200 grit black finishing paper will make the final burnishing procedure easier.
• *Alternate Two Color Application Method – Working in sections, apply a full coat of a single color of Venetian Gem® to the wall. While this layer is still wet, switch to your second color. Randomly skip trowel small areas of your second color into the wet plaster surface carefully blending and interlacing the colors together. More than one color may be used; however, remember to work wet into wet and do not apply too thickly. Once this is dry additional layers may be added to embellish the look.

If burnishing technique is applied to Venetian Gem®, it will leave areas of the plaster glossy and reflective.
