  • The earliest you can apply a top coat is after the glue loses its shine and begins to look dull.
  • For use in Crackle Finishing:
    • Apply a base coat of the color you want to show through the cracks, let dry thoroughly.
    • Apply the paramount glue at full strength for larger cracks or thin down with water for finer cracks.
    • If the glue and subsequent top coat are brushed in a linear fashion, the cracking effect will also be linear. If the glue and top coat are stippled the cracks will be more circular and random.
    • Allow glue to dry at least 45 min and ideally for up to eight hours.
    • Once, glue has lost its shine, apply the top coat. (This must be a water based material, and can be latexed vinyl acrylic, acrylic, casein or other based material.)
    • Apply the paint without working it too hard. Allow to dry thoroughly, the top coat will crack and allow the base color to show through.
    • Apply aging glazes if desired. These can be rubbed into the cracks with a clean cloth, spattered on or sprayed. Seal the entire surface with a varnish or lacquer.
