Olde World Lime Based Paint™

Olde World Lime Based Paint™ is a natural lime-based material that produces exquisite decorative finishes that are environmentally sound. Historically, lime-based materials have an ageless quality and have been used for centuries. Olde World Lime Based Paint™ maintains that quality, but actually improves in appearance with age. The texture and coloring that can be achieved has a depth and splendor that can only be found in a lime based material.

  • Establish a pleasing base pattern. It is important to set this up in the initial layer for all subsequent coats. Olde World Venetian Sealer™ can be used to seal the finish. It will darken the finish slightly. RsWaterWax™ or Olde World Venetian Wax™ can also be used; however, these will darken the finish substantially.
  • When working with lime-based products, it is best to sand the edges of the trowel periodically to keep them clean and sharp.
  • When storing product, place plastic wrap/wax paper onto the surface of the material to keep it from hardening. Keep the container sides and edges clean at all times to prevent dry material from falling into the wet product. Store airtight.
  • Ensure that the base coat is fully dry before applying any lime-based product.
  • Olde World Lime Based Paint™ can also be used in a thinner application for a more classical effect. Thin the product with 30% to 40% water. Tint to desired color. Apply this mixture using crosshatch strokes by brush, sea sponge, or rag stippling. Blend with terrycloth to soften the effect. Repeat using different color tones until the desired effect has been achieved.
  • Ensure that the substrate is perfectly clean and free of dust, grease, and grime.
  • Apply a full coat of Olde World Quartz Priming Coat™ according to product directions. Setcoat® or Texture Coat™ will also work well as a basecoat over the existing substrate. It is important to make sure that the basecoat is fully dry before proceeding with the Olde World Lime Based Paint™.
  • Tint Olde World Lime Based Paint™ using Olde World Pigments™. FauxCrème Color™ may also be used; however, the color intensity will be reduced.
  • Using a good quality stainless steel trowel (a trapezoid shape produces the best results), apply a coat of the material using short sharp strokes in an upward motion. Work wet into dry until the entire surface is covered. Allow to dry thoroughly.
  • Apply 2 to 3 more coats in the same manner. After the final coat has been applied, press firmly onto the surface with the trowel held at a 45º angle and compress the material until a very smooth finish has been achieved. Burnish the surface in two directions. The product will compress better and more easily, as well as creating enhanced light reflection on the surface.

The unit measurement on imported products varies from domestically produced products. Most products on are sold by volume measurements (Gallon, 32 Oz, 16 Oz, ETC.). However, imported products are sold by mass units (kilogram). Although they are sold based on a different unit of measurement, they are packaged in the same containers. 5 Kilogram products are sold in the 1 gallon pail and the 25 kilogram products are packaged in the 5 gallon pail. These containers do not convert to the exact volume of 1 gallon/5gallon so products will arrive only about 3/4 full. You can verify the quantity of your purchase based on a mass measurement.

When Olde World Lime Based Paint™ is used as a glue, it can also be applied to the substrate via brush or roller.
