Designer Rust™

Designer Rust™ is one component to a 3-part system used to create simulated oxidized metal finishes. Layered together they create an authentic rusted metal effect. The simple 1-2-3 procedure results in a beautiful, flat, rusted iron finish implementing a safe non-toxic, no acid formula. It can be purchased as a kit, Olde World Rust Package™, or the items can be purchased individually. Designer Rust™ is used as a base for the textured dimension of the metal simulation. Designer Rust™ contains extremely fine metal textures which aids in the metal simulation process.

NOTE: Tips are based on the 3-part Olde World Rust Package™ system, not the individual components of the system.

  • If desired during the application process, set the decorative work piece in the position in which it will be used or mounted. This will allow the product to pattern itself naturally, conforming to the shape of the piece, as if it had rusted in that position.
  • Allow the rust glaze to collect in the depressions or sculptural hollows of the work piece. This will create a heavier rusted look in those areas where it would naturally occur from the collection of moisture.
  • In the event that the work piece is flat, it is best to streak the Rust Glaze™ using cheesecloth, creating high and low areas of glaze.
  • Always make a sample to ensure the desired result.

NOTE: Basic Application instructions are based on the 3-part Olde World Rust Package™ system, not the individual components of the system.

  • Make certain that the work surface is clean and free of dust, grease and film. If a much smoother rust finish is desired, apply two thin coats of SetCoat® Black or Brown.
  • Designer Rust™ is a textured paint that can be applied directly over most metals or painted surfaces. Apply the first coat using a fine grained sponge roller or a spray unit. For spray applications, thin the material up to 30% with water, keeping in mind that the addition of water will affect certain metals, such as new raw iron. In that specific instance, new raw iron will require an anti-rust primer be applied prior to the application of the thinned Designer Rust™ base coat.
  • Permit the Designer Rust™ base to dry thoroughly. Once dry, it will be lightly textured and will appear flat, without any sheen. A second coat may be applied if extra texture is desired.
  • The second layer is the slow drying Rust Glaze™. Using a brush, cheesecloth or a spray unit, apply the Rust Glaze™ over the entire work piece.
  • While the material is still wet, remove any excess product by blotting/streaking with the cheesecloth. Continue this process until the desired amount of Designer Rust™ base is exposed. Rust Glaze may be thinned with water up to 40% if a thinner glaze is required.
  • Allow the glaze to dry a minimum of 1 hour between coats.
