People often take conscious steps to prevent rust from forming on metal surfaces, but this is only because the rust itself means damage is occurring. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a certain beauty in a rusty piece of metal, so it’s no surprise that oxidized finishes are popular faux finishes for furniture, decorative and artistic pieces, and even walls and other interior surfaces. Creating these finishes can be very simple, especially when you have the right products to help you along the way.
The Designer Rust System is a three-part system that involves SetCoat, Designer Rust, and Rust Glaze, which make it as simple as possible to create a beautiful finish that looks just like oxidized metal. In the system, the SetCoat acts as a base coat, as well as the color base for the project.
It’s available in a full range of colors, including:
The second product in the system is Designer Rust, and this gets layered onto the surface to produce the right texture for the final look. The last step is the application of Rust Glaze, which is the component in the system that’s responsible for actually creating the authentic rust finish. Each product in the system can be purchased separately, but they’re also available in one convenient package, the Olde World Rust Package.
Many people automatically think of rusty iron when they hear oxidized finish, but there’s another alternative called verdigris, which is the greenish patina that forms when copper, brass, and bronze oxidize. At Faux Masters Studio, the go-to products for this type of finish are the Verdigris products, which include metallic base coats, colorants, and paint products that are specially designed to produce a dynamic and natural-looking verdigris patina on wood, metal, plastic, and other surfaces.
For a more organic looking faux oxidized finish, choose the Lime Paint & Wash, which is a water-based product that produces a natural lime finish. When you apply the product, you apply two separate layers of color randomly over the surface, and over time the product leaches the oxidized color from below and brings it to the fore, producing a beautiful oxidized marbled finish. This easy-to-use product can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including wood, stucco, painted surfaces (with water-based paints), and even over top of any Faux Effects products you’ve already used to create a finish.
Oxidizing finishes are highly popular in faux painting circles, and even though the final results are stunning and convincing, this finish is not difficult to achieve when you have the right products. At Faux Masters Studio, we have everything you need to create a rusted iron effect, a verdigris patina, or even a marbled oxidation finish for walls and ceilings. Beyond that, we also have all the brushes, tools, and supplies you need to get the job done quickly and efficiently so that you can get started right away mastering your next faux finish.
