Tips & Tricks

Here are some general tips we have learned over the years that have helped us provide professional results.

Always keep a clean and tidy job-site. This will help you make fewer mistakes, or runs to the supply store and most importantly, create a sense of professionalism!

Measurements are approximate. Your measurements may vary depending on how careful you have been in your mixtures, and which batch of product or pigment you are using.

“Boxing” your mixtures will ensure clean results (boxing refers to inter-mixing your custom mixture to ensure equal distribution of color and ingredients).

Your sample may vary in color from your studio or class sample to your job-site. It is always a good idea to work through your finish or a client’s sample before going to the job-site.

Estimate the amounts needed and always add an extra 20% for overage (product lost in tools, buckets, floor and for situations where you may need to touch up or redo!)

When faux finshing, we generally work forward. Rarely does a surface require stripping and unless you want to be in the business of using harsh solvents, think in terms of working forward in your finishing.

Never give a bid at the same time you are estimating the job. Give yourself some space between gathering important figures and giving a bid.

Always include set-up and clean-up time in your estimations.

Most of all, ITS JUST PAINT!!! Your mistakes will become your most important lessons for the future.  If you don’t like it, paint over it and try again : )
