Blended Metallic

4-8-2009

Materials:

  • StucoLux Metallic: color of choice
  • Lusterstone: color of choice
  • Setcoat: close to colors of finish

Tools:

  • Bucket – with water for clean up
  • Burnishing Blades (Japan Spreaders) – for tight areas
  • Drop Cloth – to protect floors
  • Tape – to tape off your work area
  • Roller & Tray – #for base coating walls
  • Chip Brushes – #20 – #22, to help get into corners and crevices
  • 2 Trowels – Italian #39, or Plastic #48
  • Quite a few Cotton Rags – for clean up & other things

Procedure:

Special Note: Measurements are approximate.  Adjust as needed.  Your sample may vary in color and texture.

This finish is best achieved on a smooth or minimally textured surface.

1.      Prepare background with 1 – 2 rolled coats of Setcoat in a color close to your finish chosen. Let dry in-between and let dry completely (overnight).

2.      Double load a larger trowel to use as your “hock.” On the side facing you – your mixing side, load a larger amount with the Lusterstone color of choice. On the side opposite, with a small amount of StucoLux Metallic color of choice. Pick up a small amount of StucoLux and introduce it into your mixing side (the one with Lusterstone) and blend slightly.

3.      Using your working trowel, pull the slightly blended product vertically and horizontally across the surface. Continue to pull and blend until you achieve the desired amount of movement and or color blending. Try not to over-blend or you’ll loose your depth. You can add back in some additional solid color for contrast and interest.

4.      Let dry.

5.      Option: You may repeat this process for added dimension or to cover unwanted areas. These products are more expensive because they hide so well and they are built from high quality metallic materials so less is more! You may want to think about applying a Setcoat Metallic base color or Designer Metallic base color close to your finish for best results.

6.       Let dry.

Color Washed Plaster

7-8-08

Materials:

  • FauxCrème Colors (FCC): Earth Brown, Teal, White
  • FauxTex
  • SetCoat: Neutral White

Tools:

  • Bucket – with water for clean up
  • Drop Cloth – to protect floors
  • Tape – to tape off your work area
  • Roller & Tray – for base coating walls and rolling scratch coat
  • Chip Brushes – #20 – #22, to help get into corners and crevices
  • Trowel – Italian #39, or Plastic #48
  • Sandpaper 180 – 220 grit
  • Neon Leon  – Round OR Straight – to help blend the color
    • Quite a few Cotton Rags – for clean up & other things
    • Unbleached Cheesecloth – optional for glaze manipulation
  • Spray Bottles – One for water and one for color
  • Stencils – ours is from Royal Design Studios

Procedure:

Special Note: Measurements are approximate.  Adjust as needed.  Your sample may vary in color and texture.

Create Wash Mix:                                      Gallon                                      Color Dab

  • 1 cup Water                                   1 gallon
  • 2 tsp White FCC                            10 tbsp + 2 tsp
  • 1 tsp Teal FCC                              5 tbsp + 1 tsp
  • ½ tsp Earth Brown FCC                 8 tsp

1.      This finish will require an off-white painted surface. For the best results, apply 1 –2 coats of Neutral White SetCoat, let dry in-between and let dry completely. Textured surfaces will work well with this finish as well as smooth.

2.      Thin some FauxTex with about 20% water and mix well. Using about a ½” nap roller, roll on a light application of thinned FauxTex covering 100% of the surface

3.      Let dry.

4.      Lightly sand or scrape surface with a broad knife and dust off to remove the highest textural points in the scratch coat.

5.      Thin some FauxTex with about 10% water (or more) to make the product easier to trowel. Skip trowel FauxTex over 80% – 90% of the surface, allowing only small areas of the scratch coat layer to show. These areas are called “holidays.” Refer to “Plaster & Texture Techniques” for details of this technique. You can leave a few skips here and there. Using a minimal amount of product will improve your troweling experience. Back away from the surface often to check if patterns are evident and work to make the surface feel more organic. Try not to obliterate your entire scratch coat; once you trowel over it, the surface will never quite go back to its original state.

6.      Let dry completely. (If the surface is cold, its not dry)

Optional steps for Stenciling:

7.      Locate the areas where you will apply your stencil. You may want to place registration marks using watercolor pencils in pale colors so it can easily be wiped off with a damp rag.

8.      To apply stencil you can mist the area you wish to apply with water and then position stencil on surface (you may need to apply a small piece of tape for extra support. OR, you can use a stencil adhesive spray to lightly spray on the back of your stencil and then apply (this is especially useful for doing ceilings).

9.      FauxTex straight out of the bucket is pushed through the stencil onto the surface using a Japan Spreader (also called burnishing blades), or a cut piece of styrene works also. Apply an even coat of FauxTex through stencil. Stencils can be re-used several times during the process before having to clean them. Do not allow the Faux Tex to cake up on the stencil. It will affect the outcome of the finish if the lines are not clean. You can very lightly press a clean soft terry towel into the freshly applied FauxTex to give the surface more variety and stone-like appearance. For stencils other than borders, using an additional set of stencils reversed will allow for more variety in the design of the finish.

10.  Let Dry completely.

Applying Wash:

11.  Using 180 – 220 grit sandpaper, lightly sand any areas that have rough edges around the stencil or surface.

12.  Mist your work area lightly with water (not enough so it drips). Mist your Wash Mix over the damp area and then blend into the plaster using a Neon Leon. Feather out your edges first then swirl with Neon Leon to blend. You can lightly manipulate with cheesecloth if necessary to highlight areas.

13.  Let dry. Topcoating is not necessary.

14.  Option: To highlight the stenciled design(s), place the same stencil design over the area to be detailed (no adhesive applied). Place some White FauxCreme Color on a disposable surface and pick up some pigment onto a stencil brush and “off load” first (remove the excess). Rouge the stencil brush over the stencil to highlight your design. Keep this detailing very light and soft. It’s very easy to overdo this step.
