Design

Design trends for 2009-2010 have been compiled.

Although design is in the eye of the beholder we have listed a few articles that we think will be helpful throughout the year.

After recently attending the West Coast Interiors tradeshow Anna Jacoby outlines what she found to be the most fascinating trends. She predicts that this trend will last for the next couple of years.

For home decor, you will see:

  • Adventurous design and craft: layering of fabrics, textures, accessories; bold and graphic patterns, and lots of pattern mixing. (Did you know that wallpaper is back in fashion? Patterns are very bold and large, and would be gorgeous in a room where you really want to make a statement.)
  • Nature-inspired design: “green” products, colors of sand, sea, sky, trees; natural materials like stone, wood, glass; animal prints
  • Bohemian style: edgy, funky, ethnic mix; handcrafted originals; lots of color and pattern
  • Dramatic style: lots of black and white, mirrors, crystal, shimmer, metallics. Look for unexpected combinations such as leather combined with crystal.
  • Vintage/Nostalgic style: 1940’s looks; Hollywood style; pieces with a history

Top 10 design trends to impact 2010

This next article is courtesy of thedesigndiva through www.curbly.com. She lists the top 10 design trends that she thinks will have an impact into 2010

1. UNIQUELY ME CHIC Personalized and eclectic approach to design. Re-emergence of styles like Hollywood Regency where furniture and decor is mixed and matched to suit the homeowners personality and showcase decor they have collected “along the way”.

2. ARTISTIC LOVE
Desire for one-of-a kind items and an appreciation for the artisan, hand-crafted products for the home.

3. PATTERN PRIDE
An increasing movement toward Art Deco and Art Noveau inspired shapes and patterns, paisleys, geometrics, floral, botanicals, animal prints and birds.

4. STYLE SHOCK Mosaics and patchworks on everything from soft textiles to furniture. One of my favorites and rather ambitious mix of styles, materials and patterns is the Bellini Chair from Versace Home.

5. LUXURIOUSLY GREEN
Silky eco-bedding and other high-end objects get the Green Treatment. Green goes Luxe will be huge for 2009 and beyond with companies like Anna Sova and SDH Linens bringing to market eco-linens that feel like and look like silk.

6.MODERN EMBRACE
Not really a new trend, in itself, but rather a continued movement toward contemporary design at home. A fun stylistic twist gaining prominence and becoming “mainstreamed” is the re-interpretation of class period pieces in new , fresh vibrant forms and designs. One personal favorite is Louis XVI Medallion Chair (Gilles Nouhailhac) painted a modern color and wearing an updated 21st century upholstery.

7. FASHIONISTA FINERY Dressmaker details on soft textiles brings the glamour and beauty from the fashion runways home. Accent pillows will be wearing belts, crystals, sequence, 3d floral embellishements and other details that will make the Fashionista in you swoon.

8. DESIGN WITHOUT BORDERS Merging of multi-cultural designs – Inspired from cultures and nations across the globe – with specific focus on China, Russia, Morocco, several Latin American countries and India.

9. LIVE RESPONSIBLY
Green, Sustainable and Fair Trade in products for the home. Consumers want more than a “Green” label they want the story behind the product. They want proof that what they buy meets their Green Standard and allows for societal responsibility. One company of several that I like to highlight that produce “Live Responsibly” products is Malaika. Their  linens are created from organic cotton that is grown, spun, woven, sewn and embroidered in Egypt by underprivileged women who are taught how to embroider.

10. SANCTUARY HOME
Designing and decorating the home in soothing earth inspired colors and creating a serene, secure and happy environment (through design) in which to retreat from the crazy economic upheaval, global conflicts and the multitude of stresses outside the door of your home.

2009/2010 Furniture Trends

If you have to sum up the hot furniture trends for this year and next – one word comes to mind – eclectic!

  • Metallics are hot this year and it shows – furniture takes on a new finish with metallics – out-glitzing the mirrored Hollywood Regency trend of last year.
  • Asian styles that fell out of favor decades ago are taking a peek into rooms this year.  Look for Japanese art inspired fabrics to start leading us down the path to a kinder, gentler Asian style in furniture.
  • Bright sofas are front and center in living room furniture – out of the picture are neutral sofas with bright throw pillows, in the picture are bright sofas with neutral throw pillows.
  • Curvy couches in heavier styles are often used in black and white decorated living rooms.  Look for the couch to stick around when color hits the walls again.
  • Comfort and Joy – Comfort keeps in the forefront for the year, thank goodness, and bright colored furniture will be all the rage.
  • Modular furniture is flexibility personified for the cost-conscious consumer – urban dwellers in particular will be taking advantage of these new styles and choices.
  • Eco-awareness continues in home furnishings, with natural and environmentally friendly furniture continuing the go-green trend.
  • Gray is the hot neutral to showcase the bright furniture – a twist on the hot metallics for the year.
  • Simple, understated styling graces furniture shapes.
  • Reinterpreting the past – traditional with a twist will be hot in furniture – taking the furniture of the days of old and adding tricks of the trade to put a new face on them.
  • A little Bohemia goes a long way – with  the more clean furniture styles comes Bohemian pieced bright bold  fabrics to add interest and spotlight the simplicity in the room.

Keep an eye on these hot furniture trends of 2009 and 2010 to start making appearances in the interior design scene.
